50 Before 50

Tomorrow is another birthday for me-49 years old. It really doesn’t seem possible. Despite a few minor health setbacks recently, I feel much younger. Of course, realizing my kids are 24 and 26 is a good reminder that maybe I really am as old as I am.

Since the number 49 is already stressing me out a bit, I’m quite sure I’m really going to struggle with 50. An anecdote to this I felt was to create a 50 Before 50 list. 50 things I would like to achieve in the upcoming year. I think my biggest issue with the idea of 50 is that there is still so much I want to do. Devising a list of things to keep me busy and moving forward will hopefully ease the “growing pains”. So without further ado, here’s what I’ve come up with.

  1. Read 6 biographies/autobiographies
  2. Read a classic
  3. Read a banned book
  4. Watch a play
  5. Watch a musical
  6. Go to a drive-in movie
  7. See a live music performance
  8. Watch all the films nominated for an awards show
  9. Listen to 12 TED talks
  10. Have a piece of my writing published
  11. Submit a story to Bella Grace
  12. Complete NANOWRIMO for 2023
  13. Take a writer’s retreat for myself

Learning and Being Active

  1. Take a class to learn something new
  2. Paint a picture
  3. Take a yoga class
  4. 100 workouts @30 minutes or longer
  5. Run a 5K
  6. Go ice skating
  7. Bowl a 200+game
  8. Ride a bike
  9. Fly a kite
  10. Get a massage

Food and Drink

  1. Try 10 new recipes
  2. Learn to make a martini
  3. Learn to make one specialty coffee
  4. Try 6 new restaurants
  5. Go diet coke free for one week
  6. Eat at a food truck
  7. Learn to make Fuji-style friend rice

Going Places

  1. Road trip to somewhere new
  2. See the Forest Giants at Bernheim Forest
  3. Visit a beach
  4. Visit a museum
  5. Visit a Hallmark-like town, bonus points if it has a diner
  6. Watch the sunrise and sunset in one day-preferably when I’m visiting the beach

Around the House

  1. Create a chic home office
  2. No TV for one week (this will be tough, I love my shows)
  3. Complete a 500 piece of larger puzzle
  4. Complete a lego set
  5. Get quotes for new windows I’ve needed since moving in 5 years ago
  6. Get my will done finally
  7. Wake up at 6am for one full week
  8. Go to bed by 10pm for one full week
  9. Buy flowers for myself
  10. Create a personalized family calendar

Some Other Random Stuff

  1. Get a tattoo
  2. Get a retro typewriter (can also be a new one that looks retro)
  3. Speak in public
  4. Perform some type of volunteer work

There you go. 50 items do get done in the next year. Keep in mind, this is not my bucket list. That has some bigger stuff on it that will take a little longer than a year. Seeing the Northern lights and paying off all my debt is on that list.

What’s on your bucket list?
